Philip Toomey brings 30 years of successful business and courtroom experience to helping business owners and organizations sustain and build their enterprises. As Managing Partner of Carico Johnson Toomey LLP, he leads the first full-service law firm in the South Bay/Beach Cities region of Los Angeles County, which has been ranked in the top tier of U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in Los Angeles. Active in his community and in various professional organizations, he was appointed a California delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business, and his years of community leadership and service includes serving the City of Redondo Beach as a Chairman or Commissioner for its Planning Commission, Harbor Commission, Budget and Finance Commission, and Tax and Budget Commission.
Mr. Toomey is a well-respected litigator in employment and business law matters, including defense of class action wage and hour claims. He has successfully litigated claims involving wrongful termination, disability, race/ethnicity and age discrimination, wrongful inducement, sexual harassment, public policy/whistle-blower claim, workplace violence / safety, workplace privacy, and trade secret / unfair competition, and successfully resolved unionized employee arbitrations. He is also a Los Angeles Superior Court trained mediator.
For corporate clients, Mr. Toomey handles EPLI covered claims as pre-approved counsel. He has also supervised outside or assigned attorneys, driving discussions of risk, strategy, planning, cost and impact.
He has experience in planning and defending reduction in force initiatives, corporate campaigns and union organization activity. He has investigated and resolved numerous sensitive in-house matters, including corporate ethics, senior level and key employee sexual harassment, theft, misuse of confidential information, and diversion of corporate opportunities. Mr. Toomey has successfully closed several senior level separations, and advised management and boards on successor employer liability, Sarbanes-Oxley, and fiduciary obligations.
Mr. Toomey has set up, dissolved, kept compliant, merged and acquired hundreds of privately held businesses. He has negotiated and documented exit strategies, including leveraged management buy-outs. He has successfully negotiated with a host of Fortune 1000 companies.
From the perspective of risk management, he has reviewed hundreds of insurance policies and negotiated coverage disputes.
Mr. Toomey is in demand as a frequent panelist, moderator, and expert speaker at industry events and seminars, and has authored professional articles offering business and legal advice in numerous publications including Accounting Today, PEO Insider, Progressive Grocer, Nation’s Restaurant News, and The Deal Magazine.
He is a member of PIHA (Professionals in Human Resources Association), Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the CEO organization, Vistage International.
Toomey’s pro-bono work includes advising Child Hope International, a charity helping orphans in Haiti, and Invisible Children, a charity helping children in war-torn parts of Africa.
A graduate of Loyola Law School, Cum Laude, Mr. Toomey is a member of the national merit societies Alpha Sigma Nu and St. Thomas Moore.
